What-Does-Ozone-Work-On

Ozone generators can be used on a wide range of airborne impurities, germs, and unpleasant odors. With the exception of particulates (dust) ozone is effective against nearly aerial contaminant.

Tobacco Smoke — Ozone is particularly effective at removing odors from tobacco smoke, oxidizing and neutralizing the chemicals that give off the smoky odor. Many hotels use ozone generators to clean up after they discover a guest has violated their rules and smoked in a non-smoking room. Depending on the degree of exposure, ozone treatment may only take a couple of hours (for brief exposure to light smoking) or may need to last more than a day (for a room that was used by a heavy smoker over several years) so that the ozone can reach deep into the upholstery and carpeting where there is likely to be a lot of residual smoke. In severe cases users might also want to run the air conditioning or heating systems for at least part of the time so that ozone can cycle through the air vents.

Fire Damage — Ozone’s effects aren’t limited to the chemicals in tobacco smoke. Ozone will react with and neutralize the smells from wood and other fires. While it is essential that charred materials be removed first, ozone is valuable for removing smoke odors as part of an overall fire repair and remediation plan.

Bacteria — Ozone reacts with biochemicals, including those found on the surfaces of living cells, and can be used to kill airborne bacteria.

Viruses — Much like bacteria cells, viruses typically have a protective outer layer made up of proteins that ozone will react with, destroying the virus. There is medical research specifically showing that ozone was useful for eliminating airborne SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) virus, a coronavirus similar to COVID-19. Ozone generators may prove to be useful against COVID-19 as well.

Mold — Mold is another biological contaminant that can be treated with ozone generation. Ozone is not a substitute for a proper mold remediation procedure — visible mold on walls and surfaces should still be cleaned and any structural damage from mold will need to be repaired. But ozone will neutralize mold spores in the air and can even be used to clear any lingering mold spores on surfaces. For the best results there should be a strong dosage of ozone to reach spores that are lodged in crevices and fibers, and heating or air conditioning should be activated for at least part of the time so that mold in those systems is exposed.

Car Interiors — Ozone won’t bring back that new car smell, but it can be used to remove mold or cigarette smells from automobiles. In fact, the small size of a car or van’s interior makes it fairly easy to build up a high concentration of ozone that will penetrate the car’s upholstery and clear up even the most pungent smells. Many car detailers offer ozone treatments to clear up unpleasant odors.
